Hello!
My name is Becky Malas, author, artist and follower of Christ committed to fostering community that engages in active listening and exploring the stories of women in the Bible in new and unique ways.
My Story
My story begins in September of 2014 when my director, Tara Brooke Watkins, asked me and group of 14 other women if we would be willing to get together, talk about women in Scripture, share about our own experiences and respond with theatre games and activites. Weekly we met, bringing one woman from the Bible at a time to the group, asking deep and personal questions about their experiences and how it connected to our own lives. Tara then weaved together these stories into a show called The Bible Women's Project.
Our first performance we were terrified. We didn't know how audiences would respond because many of these stories were difficult or painful and the show at that time ran nearly 3 hours in length. But everyone in the audience had someone they knew that needed to see the show and we got to perform for a second weekend because of the audience demand. From there the show grew as the cast changed and new stories and insight were brought to our group. I had the privelge of touring all over the U.S. and Canada, even performing at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2016.
However, the question that stuck with me, that some audience member would ask after every performance, was, “Now what?" We shed light on challenging topics and stories then would leave congregations and communities not knowing what to do next. But my response to the show has always been, “Your story belongs. Your voice matters. I'm listening.” This is why I started Ἀκούετε Ministries. My goal is to create unique artistic pieces that explore the stories of women in Scripture, to educate you in unique ways of engaging with the Bible, and to build and strengthen communities of faith.
In my writings, I share my own testimony and experience with these women in Scripture. In my performance, I invite you on an experiential journey of faith and healing. In my community, I encourage people to share their own stories to find deeper meaning and connection with each other.
As you consider how you will engage in this community I challenge you:
How will you find yourself in these stories?
How will you be inspired to listen?
What will you do next?
